How to Register a Gun

When purchasing a firearm from a dealer in Wisconsin, a buying permit is not mandated, although a background check will be required to determine eligibility. If the purchase is from a private individual, no background check is necessary; however, the provided bill of sale will include a disclosure statement allowing a buyer (and seller) to formally attest to many of the obligations enforced by the federal background check.

How to Obtain a Concealed Carry Permit

There is no compulsory gun registration in Wisconsin. Still, according to WI Stat § 175.60 (2012 through Act 45), you may apply for a concealed carry license with The Wisconsin Department of Justice. This license allows for concealed weapon carry in 29 other states in the U.S. View the list of participating states at the NRA’s website.

To apply for the concealed carry license, you must meet the following required criteria:

• A legal resident of Wisconsin (with a current physical Wisconsin mailing address and active Wisconsin driver’s license or identification card).
• Twenty-one years of age or older.
• Has undergone sufficient firearm training as mandated for licensure.
• Not barred from possessing a firearm by any state, court system, or the federal government.

To apply for the firearm conceal carry license, you will need to gather the following materials to submit to the Wisconsin Department of Justice website, or you can choose to hand-deliver or mail to the Wisconsin Department of Justice office:

• A completed Wisconsin Concealed Carry Application (Form DJ-LE-287).
• An active Wisconsin driver’s license or identification card number.
• Proof of successful completion of a gun training, gun safety program, or its equivalent (Examples of adequate evidence of completion stipulated on the application form).
• Funds to compensate for the $40 application fee.
