How to Register a Vehicle

If you purchase a vehicle from a private party, you must acquire temporary plates from the DMV before legally driving the vehicle on public roads. These temporary license plates cost $10 and last 20 days, allowing you to bring the vehicle in for registration within that time span. Visit a DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) in the county in which you live and bring the following documentation:

  • Bill of sale
  • The title certificate, signed over to the new owner by the seller.
  • Proof of residency (payroll check, lease agreement, utility bill, etc.)
  • An Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form TDMV 12) containing the vehicle’s mileage.
  • Payment for any fees accrued by the registration process and/or taxes.
