How to Register a Gun

There is no restriction to procuring a firearm, which requires securing a permit before purchasing. In addition to having no license to buy, North Dakota does not have a formal gun registration process once a firearm is obtained. Upon purchasing from a federally licensed dealer or otherwise, there are no background checks restraining access to retaining a weapon of this type. Still, it is not legal to acquire if you do not meet the standard guidelines for possession. Open carry of long guns is allowed for approved purposes of hunting or use on a licensed shooting range. Transporting the weapon must be unloaded and in plain view when in the vehicle.

How to Obtain a Concealed Weapons License

Should an individual want to carry a handgun, whether it be in a concealed or open manner, it will be mandated that one must be able to pass the same threshold required to obtain a North Dakota Concealed Weapons Class 2 License. If so, the individual may utilize permitless carry. The license must first be obtained to gain the right to carry when traveling through other states that allow for reciprocity. To procure licensure, you must meet eligibility standards, and pass an approved training exam. Consider that there are two separate licenses to apply for, Class 1 and Class 2. The Class 1 license allows merely for additional states of reciprocity over Class 2, with the included states listed on the North Dakota Attorney General website.

To properly apply for either license, prepare the following filings to mail to The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation facility:

• A completed North Dakota Application for Concealed Weapons License (Form SFN-9756) or fill the online form and print it.
• Certified proof of the passing of a firearm safety test from an approved test administrator (must pass the test within 30 days of application submission).
• Two passport-style color photographs of the applicant.
• Two original fingerprint cards (obtained from your county sheriff’s office).
• A copy of your active North Dakota driver’s license or identification card.
• Money order or cashier’s check for all associated fees ($60 application fee).
