How to Register a Gun

The state of Montana’s gun laws demand no prerequisite permit to obtain a firearm and no necessity to register a weapon with the governing law officials formally. There is no need to furnish a license to acquire a long gun or handgun before purchasing the firearm. Should you elect to buy a weapon from an authorized dealer, a background check will need to be passed before gaining possession of the gun. The same background check is not insisted upon for private firearm sales. Open carry is permitted in the state without licensure for activities involving hunting, target shooting, or when utilized upon the private property of the gun owner.

How to Obtain a Concealed Weapons Permit

According to Montana Code § 45-8-321, one must first attain a Montana Concealed Weapons Permit to carry a concealed firearm lawfully. The permit commissions a resident to carry a concealed gun outside of the state when venturing within a state of reciprocity with the state of Montana. Montana’s age restriction for a permit differs from many other U.S. States, as you must only be 18 years of age to apply. You must also have resided within the state for six months or longer to be eligible.

Should you choose to apply for a Concealed Weapons Permit, visit your local county sheriff’s office location with the following listed materials for submission:

• A Montana Concealed Weapons Permit Application, only available at your county sheriff’s office (view the sample application).
• An original paper record of completion of a hunting/firearm safety course.
• An active Montana driver’s license or identification card.
• Proof of at least six months of residency in the state of Montana.
• Funds to pay for all necessary permit fees (permit cost is $60 not including background check fee).

You will receive word of denial or approval of your application within a 1-2 month time period. Once your permit is instated, it will remain valid for four years before it needs to be renewed.
