How to Register a Vehicle

After purchasing a new motor vehicle, you must have it registered with the state. Mississippi grants new owners 7 days to register the vehicle from the time of purchase (9 days if the vehicle was purchased in a different county from the one you reside in). To begin the process, visit a Mississippi DOR (Department of Revenue) located at your local tax collector’s office and remember to bring the following documentation:

  • The vehicle title contains the former owner’s signature.
  • An MS-issued driver’s license or state ID.
  • An odometer reading is required if the vehicle was bought in a different state (if there is no available space to input the mileage on the title, an Odometer Disclosure Statement – Form 78-015 must be completed).
  • You must provide the VIN (vehicle identification number) to determine tax fees.
  •  Come prepared with sufficient funds to pay any registration or tax costs.

(Proof of insurance is NOT required to register your vehicle in the state of Mississippi. However, you must have an active insurance policy to operate your vehicle legally within the state.)
