How to Register a Gun

Registration is not mandatory for individuals who own a firearm residing within the state of Missouri. There is also no official legal obligation to obtain a permit to buy or own a gun in the state and no necessity to run a background check when purchasing a firearm from a private party. Missouri’s permitless carry legislation went into effect in January 2017, allowing residents to carry a firearm openly or in a concealed manner, as long as it is not in a fashion deemed as threatening. Individual townships restrict the permitless carry provision and limit the concealed carry of a gun to those who have attained a Conceal and Carry Permit.

How to Obtain a Conceal and Carry Permit

To carry a concealed weapon across state lines, residents must apply and procure a Missouri Conceal and Carry Permit within selected states of approved reciprocity. You must be 19 or older to qualify, or 18, if you are actively enlisted in a branch of the armed forces. In addition, you must be able to pass a standard background investigation and complete a firearms training program (unless you are an active or retired member of law enforcement or the military). To apply in person, gather the following forms and documents to bring to your county sheriff’s office:

  • A completed Missouri Conceal and Carry Permit Application (some counties also provide their residents with an optional online form).
  • A certificate as evidence of passing an endorsed firearm training program.
  • A valid Missouri State driver’s license or identification card.
  • Proof of in-state residency.
  • A fingerprint identification card (available on-site at the county sheriff’s office).
  • Financial consideration for application fees.

Missouri issues conceal and carry permits on a “shall issue” basis, meaning they will accept your application if you meet all standard requirements. The process can take around a month to 45 days, as the processing time can vary from county to county. Once confirmed, the permit will be valid for five years before being up for renewal.
