How to Register a Gun

Mississippi State law does not specify any systematic registration process once a firearm is acquired. Buying a gun from an authorized dealer or private individual can be carried out without any need first to procure a permit to purchase. When purchasing a firearm from a federally licensed dealer, a resident must undergo a NICS background check. Still, when purchasing from an individual seller, no such background check is required for long guns or handguns.

Open carry is permitted without a supplemental license in authorized areas throughout the state. Permitless handgun carry is allowed if the gun is concealed in a handbag, purse, holster, or similar method. Remember that an ankle holster does not apply in this case and will be considered unlawful unless the holder procures a Concealed Carry Firearm Permit.

How to Obtain a Concealed Carry Firearm Permit

Although permitless carry went into effect in 2015, Mississippi allows its residents to apply for a Concealed Carry Firearm Permit to effectively travel within outside reciprocity states (Mississippi Legislature HB § 45-9-101). One can apply for two different licenses: The standard permit or the enhanced permit. The enhanced permit allows for additional carry in other generally prohibited areas without licensure, such as court buildings. A resident must meet the standard eligibility specifications to qualify for either license. An individual must be at least 21 or older (or 18 if actively enlisted in the military) and have been a resident for no less than one year. Also, one must be able to pass a customary background evaluation. Mississippi Concealed Carry Firearm Permits are not available to non-residents of the state.

To apply for A Mississippi Concealed Carry Firearm Permit, attend your nearest Mississippi Firearm Permit facility with the following presented paperwork:

• A completed and notarized Mississippi Application for a Concealed Carry Firearm Permit (Form Rev 4-17).
• An accepted passport-style color photograph.
• Two forms of valid identification:
  1. A Mississippi driver’s license or identification card (with photo)
  2. A birth certificate, passport, or social security card (alternate second forms of identification covered on the first page of the application form).
• A fingerprint identification card (taken on-location at the time of submission).
• Acceptable form of payment for permit fees.

Once submitted, allow 45 days for processing and background investigation before receiving word on the status of your permit. Once the governing authorities have evaluated your application and come to a decision, you will be informed of the circumstances by mail. After you are issued the permit, it will be valid for five years before renewal is required.
