How to Register a Gun

Laws involving gun control in Nevada do not insist upon a form of systematic registration or licensure to own or purchase a firearm. However, the state will require all individuals to undergo an NICS background investigation to qualify for a weapon (long gun or handgun), whether through a private sale or a federally licensed firearms dealer. State measures also stipulate that possession of a short-barreled rifle, shotgun, or silencer is prohibited within state lines. Open carry of a long gun or handgun is permitted without a license in areas authorized for hunting and target activity per Nevada Constitution Article 1 Section 11.

How to Obtain a Concealed Firearm Permit

To legally carry a concealed handgun, a resident must first apply for and secure an official Nevada Concealed Firearm Permit. The permit will additionally allow for out-of-state travel inside of states of approved reciprocity. To be eligible for the permit, a resident must be 21 years of age, have evidence of familiarity with firearm safety, and meet federal standards regarding criminal history and mental stability. To apply for a permit, you will need to obtain the following documents for presentation at the Fingerprint Bureau of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department:

• A filled Nevada Concealed Firearm Permit Application (Form Rev 5-16).
• A certificate to prove completion of an approved firearms safety course from an accepted instructor.
• An active Nevada driver’s license or identification card.
• A fingerprint identification card (made available on-site for an additional fee).
• Accepted payment for all license fees ($96).

It can take up to 4 months to process, conduct a background check, and receive notification by mail. Once your license is confirmed, it will remain active for five years from the date of issue.
