How to Register a Gun

New Mexico statutes enforce that there can be no organization for cataloging firearms in the form of registration. This means owning a gun does not require registration of any kind. Although acquiring a gun will not compel an individual to obtain a permit, one will require a background check before the buyer can take possession of the weapon upon buying. This stipulation goes for both dealer sales and used private-party acquisitions. Open carry is sanctioned in designated areas for hunting, range shooting, or on private property for both handguns and long guns without a physical permit. To carry a handgun unloaded and concealed is also allowed without needing a permit, as well as carrying any loaded weapon (concealed or openly) in a vehicle per NMSA § 29-19-1.

How to Obtain a Concealed Handgun License

To carry a handgun in a concealed fashion, one must first furnish a Concealed Handgun License. This license will additionally allow for concealed carry outside the boundary lines of the state of New Mexico within active NM reciprocity states. To become eligible for the license, you must be at least 21 years of age and be able to meet the strict criteria to pass the background check that will take into account criminal and substance abuse history as well as any prior mental instability. You will also be mandated to undergo and complete a firearms safety program before applying.

Once you have completed the required firearm safety course (or have proof of experienced military or law enforcement training), you may prepare the following documents to send via mail to The New Mexico Department of Public Safety:

• A notarized New Mexico Concealed Handgun License Application Form.
• A certificate proving completion of an approved firearms training class from an authorized instructor.
• An authenticated original birth certificate of the applicant.
• Two fingerprint identification cards (available at your local sheriff’s office for a $9 fee).
• A copy of the applicant’s active New Mexico driver’s license or identification card.
• An approved form of compensation for the background check ($15) and application fees ($100).

The processing time for the application to be approved can vary. Still, it is usually around one month before you receive information on your permit’s status after submission. Upon approval, the license is valid for four years from the issue date. When it comes time to renew a license, a 2-hour online refresher course will require completion to become eligible.
