How to Register a Gun

Governance of firearms and provisions of the state code do not require an individual to furnish a permit to purchase a gun, nor does a gun require registration upon purchase. A person must be at least 18 to buy a gun, and if purchased from a dealer, a standard background check is required for a one-time fee of $7.50. Should an individual purchase a used gun through a private sale, no such background check shall be warranted. Open carry of a long gun is sanctioned without a license, although carrying a handgun (open carry or concealed carry) will require an actively concealed carry permit. This license can additionally come in handy if traveling outside of state boundaries, as many states recognize the reciprocity of the permit.

How to Obtain a Concealed Firearm Permit

To Secure a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit, you must gather the following materials for submission either via mail or in person at the Utah Bureau of Criminal Investigation facility in Salt Lake City:

• A finalized Utah Application for Concealed Firearm Permit.
• Certificate of completion for a state-approved weapons safety course.
• A standard passport photograph. (can be completed on-site for a separate fee of $15)
• A fingerprint card (can be completed on-site for a separate fee of $15)
• A valid photo identification card or driver’s license.
• A current out-of-state permit (if relocating to Utah with a current out-of-state permit).
• Accepted form of payment for all associated fees.

The application can take up to 60 days for the Utah Bureau of Criminal Investigation to approve a permit. A mailed response within 60 days will indicate notification of acceptance or denial of your application. Once instated, a permit will be valid for 5 years from the date granted.
