How to Register a Gun

The Colorado legislature does not dictate firearm registration. It is actually legally prohibited for any law enforcement agency within the state to implement such a process (subject to C.R.S. § 29-11.7-102). No licensing or permit is required unless the gun owner wants to carry a concealed handgun.

How to Obtain a Concealed Carry Permit

Any individual applying for a CHP (Concealed Handgun Permit) must be at least 21 years of age and legally reside within Colorado (refer to C.R.S. § 18-12-203 for more qualifications). Interested parties should contact their local sheriff’s department to inquire about the application process, as it may vary in different counties. The mandatory requisites will include:

• A state-issued form of photo ID.
• Proof affirming that the applicant resides within the county they claim (utility bill, tax filing, lease).
• A document verifying that the applicant has passed a certified handgun training course (must be signed by the instructor).
• Payment for the cost associated with any background checks or application fees (generally requested to provide a cashier’s check or money order).
• Obligatory background checks will include:

  • FBI Fingerprint Check
