How to Register a Boat

Should you choose to take a boat out on waters located in Kansas, you may be obligated to register the vessel with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism. You must register if your boat is to remain within the state for beyond 60 days. Should the boat be utilized for less than 60 consecutive days on Kansas waters, it must still be properly registered in another state to be legally operational. The registration requirement does not extend to any watercraft without a method of propulsion, such as an electric/gas motor or sail.

When purchasing a new or used vessel, it must be registered within 30 days of the date of sale to avoid penalty fees. To obtain registration, assemble the following documentation to present to your nearest Boat Registration Agency or State Park:

• A fully filled-out Application for Certificate of Number Kansas Boating Act Form.
• A completed and endorsed bill of sale.
• Receipt for payment of sales tax associated with the boat’s purchase (if purchased from a dealer):
  • If purchased from a dealer within Kansas:
    • You will be required to furnish STD 8 tax documentation.
  • If purchased from a dealer outside of Kansas:
    • Proof of payment via a bill of sale or receipt.
    • If you have not paid sales tax, you must do so at a County Treasurer’s Location.
• Evidence of proper boat insurance.
• Valid photo identification or driver’s license.
• Sufficient money to pay the $42.50 registration fee.
